What is Granular Synthesis

Granular synthesis is a technique that involves dividing a sample into very short pieces, and then playing the pieces back superimposed and crossfaded with one another. These pieces, or 'grains,' are usually under 50 milliseconds long and sound like short clicks when heard individually. But when layered together, grains can produce lush textures with rich modulation possibilities.

Stop me if you’ve heard this before:

You’ve woken up in a mysterious testing facility filled with traps and puzzles. An all-knowing voice occasionally speaks to you to offer encouragement and to remind you that everything will be perfect as long as you follow the instructions. However, there are multiple indications that the voice cannot be trusted.

On the surface, Talos Principle is a great puzzle game similar to titles like Portal and Antichamber. But if you take the time to absorb the backstory through terminals, you unlock a very deep.

As easy as it is to be cynical – and it’s impossible to shake the notion that you’ve already been through these motions – the solid design and the novel subject matter make the game well worth playing, even it does take a while to get to the point.

Solve the Puzzle, Go Back For The Riddle And The Enigma

Let’s start with the good. The Talos Principle is incredibly satisfying to play. The puzzle design is extraordinary, cleverly utilizing many disparate elements in a 3D geometric space. More importantly, the puzzles test logic rather than reflexes. Portal often demanded accuracy at high speeds. Even if you could solve the puzzle, you might not be able to complete it if you weren’t any good at shooters.

In The Talos Principle, you simply have to arrange static items like blocks and fans in the proper position. The puzzles are still devilishly complex, but the solutions are easy to implement once you’ve figured them out and that remains true through to the end of the game. A block will always stay exactly where you left it. It’s a puzzle game, not a puzzle platformer.

The problem is that those puzzles are literally walled off from the aesthetic aspects of the game. Though The Talos Principle is structured like Portal, the subject matter is quite different. The Talos Principle is about artificial intelligence and the nature of freedom and humanity (the title refers to a Greek myth about a living statue), a theme that creeps into the game through the voiceover and material that you find on computer terminals scattered throughout the game.

Eden Rebranded

For the most part, the musings are effective, making up for a lack of dark humor with a surprising amount of sincerity and warmth. The player character is a robot (that’s not a spoiler), and the game allows you to decide how you feel about your own individuality. What does it mean to have free will? Why do you deserve it when you’re just a mechanical construct? Like the Garden of Eden, the game world is a tranquil, visually stunning place where knowledge is dangled as a dangerous temptation.

The serpent arrives in the guise of a second AI who resides within the computer, a gadfly intellect that primarily exists to play Devil’s advocate. The conversations with the AI are refreshingly organic, constantly challenging you on your conclusions about existence. It can get a little obnoxious when the conversations get more complicated and your response options are limited, but the game is aware of the dynamic and there is a genuine payoff at the end. Those Who Came Before

That’s more or less true of The Talos Principle more broadly. The philosophy is not groundbreaking, but the developers are self-aware and avoid the proselytizing that often derails attempts to address abstract ideals in a fictional setting. The game just wants you to think. It disrupts your impulse to blindly click through discussion boxes and fleshes out the world with collectible documents that subtly build civilization around you. It sometimes veers towards the pretentious – the historical accounts detailing Egyptian burial rites are particularly dull – but the memos between staff members of the lab that produced your AI tech are fascinating.

Pure Puzzle

But remember when I said the puzzles are literally walled off from the story? Well, The Talos Principle is composed of three hubs, each with seven distinct zones that house four or five self-contained puzzles. When you walk through a gateway into a puzzle area, the rest of the world ceases to exist. It’s just you and the solution, without any hints at depth or philosophy. Any written material is confined to computer terminals that rigidly dictate when and where you engage the narrative.

Since reading documents requires a completely different mindset than puzzle solving, the story becomes an interruption of the gameplay. The puzzles are purely systemic, offering arbitrary challenges that are enjoyable in and of themselves but don’t offer much in the way of meaning. It’s fun to solve the puzzles. It’s fun to argue with the computer.

You Gotta Keep ‘Em Separated

But the two never meet, and the complete segregation of the gameplay and the narrative occasionally slows the pace to a drag. Checking in with the computer feels like an obligation that can make it tough to pay attention when you’d rather be doing something else. That’s ultimately the game’s biggest flaw. The Talos Principle is slightly overdesigned, lasting a bit too long without enough variation on the formula to justify the length.

The result is a game that adds up to the sum of its parts, a substantial figure that could have been greater had the puzzles and narrative not existed in separate planes of reality.

I’m Making A Note Here: HUGE SUCCESS

The Talos Principle is still one of the best independent games of the year based solely on the strength of its components. The puzzle design truly is exceptional, and the narrative has higher ambitions than the vast majority of video games. But it doesn’t always hold together as a cohesive whole, which prevents it from reaching the peaks of a game like Portal, or even last year’s Papers, Please. It’s merely very good, and it’s up to you to determine if that’s an endorsement.

Recall, 50 grams of crack is just under 2 ounces (56 grams would be 2 ounces). However, 5000 grams of powder cocaine is approximately 179 ounces. If cut for resale, that 5000 grams of powder cocaine could easily become 10,000 grams; or about 360 ounces. That is major supplier weight.

Because of this, Fender's most innocent era of the 1950's istheir most collectible. This decade produced guitars with one-piece maple necks, single layer pickguards, thin 'spaghetti' logos, and tweed cases that seem to capture collectors the most.

The early 1960's Fenders with 'slab' rosewood fingerboards are also collectible,but not to the extent of the earlier 1950's maple-neck era. Of the rosewoodfingerboard models, the 'slab' fingerboard (1958/mid-1959 to August 1962) variants are more desirable than the 'veener' fingerboard (August 1962 and later)pre-CBS models. The 'transistion' era (late summer 1964 to December 1965)are the least collectible of the pre-CBS models. This era is knownas a 'transition' because later summer 1964 to December 1965 was the timewhen there was a transition from the Leo Fender management to CBSmanagement, and mass-production manufacturing techniques werestarting to take a firm hold.

By 1966 (a year after CBS bought Fender), CBS management had really taken hold of Fender's production facilities and incorporated many changes. The sum of of all these changes had a serious effect on Fender guitars as a whole. 1966 brought an era of 'large' pegheads, less contoured bodies, and much higher production numbers. CBS looked for ways to cut productiontime and costs, which generally led to much lower quality. Because ofthis, 1966 and later Fender instruments are considered far less collectible than vintage pre-CBS Fender guitars.

Dating Valco Instruments

The most effective way to date a Valco guitar or amp is by its serial number. From the ‘40s until 1964, the serial could be found stamped into a small metal plate that was tacked onto the back of the headstock or the back of the cabinet. From 1964-1968, the serial was ink-stamped onto a silver foil sticker that is found in the same place. The following is a key for decoding the serial number, but keep in mind that the numbers are approximate.

The National String Instrument Corporation was formed to manufacture the first resonator guitars, known as resophonic guitars. National also produced resonator ukuleles and mandolins. The company was originally formed by John Dopyera, the luthier who invented the resonator, and musician George Beauchamp, a steel guitar player who had suggested to Dopyera the need for a guitar loud enough to play a melody over brass and other wind instruments.

In Los Angeles, the early 1920’s was quickly becoming the entertainment capital of the world. In this era, many guitarists sought instruments that could complete in volume with other instruments in the orchestra. Guitars were un-amplified string instruments in those days and were relegated to just adding to the rhythm section. It was not loud enough to be a lead instrument. Many frustrated guitar players that wished they could be compete with brass and reed instruments like the banjo did, but sound sweet like an acoustic guitar.

Musician and vaudeville promoter George Beauchamp, sought a louder, improved guitar to play at his gigs. Several inventors had already tried to build louder stringed instruments by adding megaphone-like amplifying horns to them. Beauchamp saw one of these and went looking for someone to build him one. John Dopyera, a violin repairman with a shop fairly close to Beauchamp’s Los Angeles home was asked to innovate and build a guitar that was louder and better than when was already available.

In 1908, the Dopyeras emigrated from Slovakia to California, USA sensing a war would erupt in Europe. In the 1920s, Dopyera founded his own store in Los Angeles where he worked making and repairing fiddles, banjos, and other wooden string instruments. Around this time, Dopyera patented several improvements on the banjo. John Dopyera was one of 10 siblings.

John Dopyera, a Slovak-American took up the challenge. Dopyera was already a recognized inventor that had several patents for various ideas. Some were for improved Banjos, that Dopyera and his brother Rudy were building in the small shop. Beauchamp wanted his own idea built that featured an Hawaiian guitar that sat on a stand; a Victrola horn attached to the bottom and pointed towards the audience. The Dopyera’s did not think much of the idea, but built it for George Beauchamp as requested. It was a failure as it did not sound great.

John Dopyera had been thinking about resonator guitar for some time, so the Dopyeras then started experiments with thin, cone-like aluminum resonators attached to a guitar bridge and placed inside a metal body. The early prototype utilized a large aluminum single-cone resonator, but working through the issues John Dopyera found that using three smaller cones produced a smoother more balanced guitar sound. They called this the tri-cone resonator, sometimes referred to a triplate.

John Dopyera had experienced with several prototypes using from one to four resonator cones. He found that as one cone was a bit louder, three produced a nicer musical tone. He had also tried several materials including paper, pressed fibre, glass, tin and other sheet metal to make the resonant cones. Thin Aluminum that looked like a loudspeaker worked he best. He used a cast aluminum bridge and an inserted wood saddle as he saw it transmitted the sound from the strings to the resonator cones best.

Beauchamp, impressed with the tri-cone design, suggested forming a manufacturing company with the Dopyeras, who had already started making the tri-cone guitars in their small workshop. The Dopyeras called these guitars Nationals, the same name they used on their Banjos. They probably made about 40 or more guitars before a factory was established.

Beauchamp, trying to find investors, took the tri-cone prototype and the Sol Hoopii Trio (a world-famous Hawaiian group) to a lavish party held by his millionaire cousin-in-law, Ted Kleinmeyer. Sol Hoopii was a top steel guitar player and was being paid $500 to entertain the guests. The guests were mesmerized by the sound of the new tai-cone in the hands of Sol Hoopii. Kleinmeyer was so excited about the guitar and the prospects for a new company that he gave Beauchamp a check for $12,500 that night. That was quite a lot of money in the 1920s.

National Tri-cone

In 1927, National produced the first resonator instruments and sold under their new National brand. They had metal bodies and a tri-cone resonator system, with three aluminium cones joined by a T-shaped aluminium spider. Production of the metal-body guitars began almost immediately. Beauchamp, acting as general manager, hired some of the most experienced and competent craftsmen he could find, including several members of his own family and the Dopyeras. They were quite popular in the days before electric guitars, but were relatively time consuming and expensive to manufacture. Many of these guitars are quite ornate and engraved with scenes like palm trees. Art-Deco meets superior and innovative design that made guitars louder in the era before electric guitars. Nationals not only sounded great they looked fantastic.

  “We think it’s time for Florida to take it out of the shadows and into the sunshine,” he said.
  Brandes filed a bill that would authorize the Florida Lottery to offer sports betting through self-service kiosks. The state lottery would also offer licenses for businesses to take sports bets through websites and mobile apps. Licensees would split their proceeds 50-50 with the state’s share going to fund scholarships and educational services.
  Legalized sports betting is inevitable, but it won’t happen in the near future in Florida, said Bob Jarvis, a law professor at Nova Southeastern University.
  Jarvis said he wouldn’t bet on Brandes’ bill finding success in Tallahassee because it ignores the “800-pound gorilla in the room” — the powerful Seminole Tribe of Florida.
  “His bill is DOA,” said Jarvis, who teaches classes on gambling law. “A longshot comes through every once in awhile. This bill isn’t getting out of the chute.”
  The tribe operates six casinos across the state and wants to control sports betting, he said.
  Legalized sports betting also would set off a barrage of lawsuits that would take time to resolve — from whether sports leagues should get a cut of the proceeds to whether the Legislature has the power to offer sports betting through the state lottery, Jarvis said.
  Brandes’ bill would allow betting on collegiate and professional sports, as well as Olympic and international contests. Youth and high school sports are omitted. The bill allows in-game betting, and you’d have to be 21 or older to wager.
  While Brandes sees a boon for the state, John Sowinski, president of the anti-gambling group No Casinos Florida, sees a nightmare. He said legalized sports betting would turn stadiums into open-air casinos where fans are betting on everything from how many fumbles there will be to how long it will take a singer to finish the national anthem before the game.

  Sports would be forever changed by the addictive form of gambling that would be only a click away, Sowinski said.
  He doesn’t think the Legislature even has the authority to authorize sports betting.
  “It can only be approved by voters through a statewide constitutional initiative,” Sowinski said. “It is a reasonably open and shut matter.”
  In 2018, voters approved Amendment 3, which stipulated that any expansion of “casino gambling” can be done only through a citizen-initiated constitutional amendment.

  Sowinski said that means voters would have to approve sports betting in the ballot box. Brandes, though, has a different interpretation and thinks sports betting could be authorized by the Legislature and wouldn’t require voter approval.
  That amendment, plus the Florida House’s historic opposition to gambling bills, could put a stop to Brandes’ efforts. His bill does not have a companion piece of legislation in the House.
  When Will Florida Legalize Sports Gambling Laws
  Earlier this year, the Seminole Tribe quit a longstanding revenue-sharing agreement it had with the state, which granted the tribe exclusivity on lucrative blackjack and other banked card games at its casinos.
  The Seminoles say the state has failed to enforce that exclusivity, and the tribe started withholding its roughly $350 million annual payments earlier this year. As a new deal is being negotiated, the tribe has expressed an interest in sports betting.
  The U.S. Supreme Court paved the way for states to legalize sports betting in a 2018 decision. Nineteen states have legalized sports wagering.
  But sports betting is still off limits in the three most populous states — California, Texas and Florida. In New York, sports betting is allowed only at upstate casinos.

  “There is so much money at stake,” he said. “Everyone wants sports betting. The public wants sports beating. The leagues want sports betting because there is new revenue. The government wants sports betting because of the tax revenue.”
